We give a demonstration of a native group conversation.

Natives English speakers talk over each other and interrupt.

These group conversations can be difficult to understand, so you need strategies!

In this webclass, we share the strategies you need to understand fast group conversations.

Why does TPR work?

The more associations someone has with a vocabulary word or a skill, the more mental pathways are being established.

For example, when learning vocabulary, if you use cards with different colors and shapes, you’ll associate words with those colors and shapes.

Creating these physical responses helps your body and brain be more active.

Also, it’s vital to account for different learning styles.

Not everyone can learn through hearing a lecture.

Some students need physical activity to be able to commit things to memory.

Who is this activity for?

This is perfect for you if you’re beginning to learn IELTS Reading strategies.

It’s also great for you if you have strategies, but are struggling applying them.

Not everyone can take in information and just do it right away.

This type of activity can help you apply and practice those strategies.

Step #1: Preparation

Get 4-5 paragraphs or entire articles depending on your level and the time you have to devote.

Hang these around the room.

Write key words on a board or print them and hang the papers up.

For students just learning this skill, write the same key words that are in the passage.

If you are a higher level student, use parallel expressions.

Step #2: Competition

Introducing competition always makes an activity more fun and exciting!

Give yourselves 5 minutes to look for the keywords.

If you are a teacher, instruct your class that they have 5 minutes to find the keywords.

Students will run around the room looking for the key words in the articles.

You must limit the time, because you’re training yourself to the idea that you don’t have time to read on the IELTS Reading exam.

You only have time to scan!

How can you complete this activity virtually?

You can do this activity at home, running around to find key words in articles.

You can also do it as a competition with a Speaking partner!

  • Step 1: Find 3 newspaper articles.
  • Step 2: Read the articles and choose 2 keywords in each.
  • Step 3: Email the articles and keywords to your Speaking partner.
  • Step 4: Have your Speaking partner send you the same.
  • Step 4: Compete against each other to see who can find their keywords fastest!
  • Step 5: Discuss together how it went and the strategies you found useful.

Takeaway

You need to make your IELTS study interesting and engaging!

If it is miserable, you might put it off or spend less time than you need to.

TPR activities are one way you can make study fun and exciting.

This activity can be done in person or virtually.

It’s a great way to practice scanning for keywords!

Give it a try and let us know in the comments how it goes!
