"The English Adventurer"

You are probably aware that watching movies in English improves your language ability. However, you can use any movie in more ways than you think, and directly improve your skills for the IELTS Exam.

IELTS Listening:

Of course, this is the skill that will be practiced the most when watching a movie!

If it is difficult to understand, watch the first 30 minutes with subtitles before turning them off.

IELTS Writing:

After you watch the movie, write in your IELTS journal.

First, summarize the plot.

Then, compare this story with something in your culture. For instance, do situations like this happen in your culture? Do characters like this exist in your country?

Think about how people communicate to each other in the film, or the choices they make. Could this happen where you live?

IELTS Speaking Part 2:

After you watch it, talk about the movie for 2 minutes.

First, talk about the plot. This is the story of your answer, as we recommend doing in Speaking Part 2.

Then, provide your reaction to the film. Did you like it? Which character do you most identify with?

IELTS Reading:

After you watch the movie, read about it on imdb.com and rottentomatoes.com.

Choose an actor or the director from the links in the articles, and read more about this person.

Then, find another film that this person is in or directed and watch that too!

What movies should you watch?

We’ve made many movie recommendations, but here’s some more!

Baby Driver– An incredibly amazing marriage of music video and film, and an epic crime flick.

Moana– Yes, this is a kid’s movie, but it’s fantastically positive and entertaining!

The Big Sick– Written by a husband and wife, based on their story, and starring one of my favorite comedians, Kumail Nanjiani.
