You may need to talk about lying on IELTS.

IELTS Speaking questions might require you to admit a time you lied.

Part 3 could ask you questions about how dishonesty affects a society.

Be ready with today’s topic-specific vocabulary and sample answers.

Synonyms for lying

If talking about lies, you need multiple ways to say this.

  • Fib
  • Little white lie
  • Distort the truth
  • Stretch the truth
  • Be dishonest

A “fib” is not a serious, harmful lie.

It’s usually fairly innocent, similar to little white lies.

Distorting or stretching the truth means one isn’t being completely honest.

It isn’t as serious as accusing someone of a blatant lie.

“I may have distorted the truth a little, but I didn’t outright lie!”

Lying by omission

Lies by omission are another form of dishonesty.

This is allowing someone to believe something that isn’t true and not speaking up to correct it.

There are varying opinions about how serious these lies are.

“Omission” is a band 9 word so use this on IELTS Speaking!
