What is the issue?

Are you aware that we have this discrepancy? In American soccer, the women’s soccer team doesn’t make as much money as the men’s professional team but they are way more successful. This makes people mad!

Megan Rapinoe is an American professional soccer player on the national team who fights for women’s rights and equality.

She is very outspoken as far as her lifestyle preference and how everybody should be free to be who they are and that everyone deserves equal rights.

This general topic of gender equality and rights and salaries and gender roles comes up all the time in Speaking Part 3 and Writing Task 2 on IELTS.

How to handle a question about a controversial issue:

When it comes to Speaking Part 3 it’s kind of an art. You have to be prepared with a little bit of structure going into this part of the test.

So if a Part 3 question is asking for your opinion, state your opinion directly and immediately and then support it with specific examples.

If you’re preparing for your IELTS exam, you have to develop your Culture of Thinking.

This is the idea that we have to set up our lifestyle and our personal culture where we have a lot of input coming our way.

We need to be fully immersed in information multiple times per day. We need to constantly seek it out.

Be curious.

Always seek to learn more.

This is what high-scoring students always do and this strategy will help you get past IELTS.

Vocabulary for IELTS 7 or higher:

Here are some vocab phrases about gender inequality:

  • “Women earn 80 cents on the dollar”- This means that for every dollar that a man earns, women would earn 80 cents for the same job.
  • “The glass ceiling” This refers to a woman or any sort of minority.

Takeaway:

You must be ready for controversial, opinion-related questions on IELTS Speaking Part 3.

Will you be able to answer this kind of question if you get it?

Prepare by seeking out information. Read the newspaper. Watch the news. Have an understanding of what is happening in the world and form your own opinion on these issues before test day.

If you do these things you can be confident that you get your 7 or higher on IELTS Speaking and IELTS Writing.
