Today, we’ll show you a quick and unique tip to help your Reading preparation!

A student in our course is having some difficulty with Matching Headings to Paragraphs questions.

Here’s her question:

I know you say it’s supposed to be the easiest question type. However, it is the most difficult for me. When I read the whole paragraph, I can answer it, but, when I read only the beginning and end, I am trapped by a trick and my answer is wrong. I know I don’t have time to read the whole paragraph on the real test, so what am I doing wrong?

Here’s my advice:

Take a step back!

First, review the strategies in the course and review the practice exercises.

With the more challenging questions like this, as well as T/F/NG and Y/N/NG, here’s an extra preparation strategy:

  1. First, write down the answers.
  2. Go back to the passage. Figure out why this is the answer.
  3. Match key words in the paragraph to key words in the heading, so you see exactly why this is the answer.
  4. Do this for 3-4 passages. You will see a pattern, and give yourself confidence. The answer is in the beginning and end of the paragraph!

This is a method of working backwards, which is a great idea for gaining confidence in the Reading strategies.

All the Reading strategies are designed to save time, and you will often not feel 100% sure of your answer.

You don’t have time to read the whole passage and check your answers 20 times.

The fact is, without these tricks, you can’t find all the answers in 60 minutes.

Unfortunately, the Reading exam is not really a test of your reading, it’s a test of your ability to skim and scan.

Our strategies work, as our students’ scores of 9’s on the Reading exam show!
