What must you have in your IELTS Writing Task 2 introduction?

On a recent episode about essay introductions, we mentioned that you should give the history of the topic in your first sentence.

How can you do this?

Firstly, you should name the essay topic right away.

When you read the IELTS Task 2 question, you must underline key ideas. Then, try to think about the topic, and try to summarize it approximately 4 words.

Then, in the first sentence of the introduction, state the topic right away.

Let’s look at an example.

Blood sports have become a hot topic for debate in recent years. As society develops, it is increasingly seen as an uncivilized activity and cruel to the helpless animals that are killed. All blood sports should be banned.

Discuss the main arguments for this statement and give your own opinion.

Examples of blood sports include cock fighting, dog fighting, and bull fighting.

The topic of this essay would be banning blood sports.

Thus, the first sentence of your essay could be, “Banning blood sports has been a contentious issue in the headlines for the past decade.”

An important thing to remember here is that your time frame, or history, must be appropriate. For instance, you cannot say this has been in the headlines for centuries, because that is simply not true.

Here’s another example.

Government investment in the arts, such as music and theater, is a waste of money. Governments must invest this money in public services instead.

To what extent do you agree with this statement?

The topic of this essay would be government investment in arts/public service.

This topic is longer than 4 words, obviously. Remember that you must be flexible with your strategies.

So, my first sentence of the introduction would be, “The direction of federal money, whether it be in the humanities or public facilities, is a hot topic these days.”
