Would you like to change your IELTS score into an 8?!

Of course you would!

One key to increasing your IELTS Speaking and Writing scores is using native speaker vocabulary.

In today’s episode, you’ll get high-scoring words and phrases to talk about the topic of change.

shift

This could be used in Writing Task 2, such as a shift in perspective.

This verb could also be used anywhere on the Speaking Exam.

turn over a new leaf

We use this idiom to describe starting a new habit.

For example, you could say, “I’m going to turn over a new leaf this year, and start going to the gym 3 times a week.”

same old same old

I say this a lot to describe activities that are the same as always.

If you are asked about your leisure time in Speaking Part 1, you could say, “My friends and I pretty much just do the same old same old- play video games and eat pizza.”

break the mold

This idiom describes completely changing something.

You can use this to describe something truly impressive and groundbreaking, such as, “In the recent movie Doctor Strange, Tilda Swinton really broke the mold. She took on a role traditionally meant for an older Asian man as a white British woman. It was amazing.”

reinvent yourself

This is a concept central to American culture and ideals.

If you want to completely change yourself, become a new person, you can use this phrase.

For example, you could say, “Due to the recession, I had to reinvent myself and completely change my career.”

You could also use this to describe changing your clothes or interests.

This can be an important idea for changing your Speaking Exam score, by changing your personality into a confident, impressive English speaker.

How do you want to reinvent yourself? What leaves are you turning over this year?
