Kerry, an American native English speaker, is our guest today, and will answer IELTS Speaking questions.

Firstly, as Kerry says, you can say in Part 1, “I’m a student slash acupuncturist slash mother.” This is very native and naturally high-scoring!

Take notes on how Kerry answers these questions. You can mimic her natural stress and intonation, as well as take notes on any interesting vocabulary you hear.

IELTS Part 1 Questions:

Work/studies

Do you work or are you a student?

What did you study?

What did you enjoy most about your studies?

What would you like to do with these studies in the future?

Cold weather (A great example of an odd speaking topic that you might not practice talking about!)

Have you ever been in a really cold place?

*Kerry says ‘feets of snow’! It should be ‘feet of snow’.

In your country, are some places colder than others?

*Kerry says ‘weathers’. It should be ‘weather’.

Describe a dinner you would like to give for friends.

Lessons from Kerry’s answer:

  • Vocabulary: ideally, potluck, add a little part of themselves, aromas, have a fancy, dinnerware, cozy
  • Kerry, a native speaker, could only speak for one minute. Everyone needs to practice talking for two minutes!
  • Practice hard topics such as describing a person in the news, or describing an historical event.

IELTS Part 3 Questions:

Would you say that in general people in your country have healthy diets? Why/why not?

Do you see this trend changing in the future?

Lessons from Kerry’s answers:

  • Vocabulary: emphasis, fueling their bodies, taken out of the equation, emerging trends, more awareness
  • Her vocabulary naturally changed to more academic, formal phrases.
