Technology comes up often in IELTS Speaking and Writing.

In Speaking Part 2, for instance, you may be asked to describe an invention that has changed the world.

Most candidates talk about computers or the internet for this prompt. Remember, though, that you can stand out in your ideas by talking about something unexpected!

In Speaking Part 3, however, you are often asked to predict the future. This can be challenging for some students- imagination is key here!

Today we’ll be specific about our ideas for future household technology. Lindsay believes that smart homes are important here.

This will make our homes integrated with technology that is so intuitive that it functions seamlessly. It can predict your actions to make your life easier around the house.

This can be seen in a lot of sci-fi movies, where the house changes room by room as the person walks in, such as playing specific music or altering the temperature.

Watching sci-fi movies is a great resource to get ideas about the future. Also, you can read about current technology that is being developed. (This article links to a lot of resources for you to read!)

Lindsay mentions the Nest, that allows you to monitor your home remotely.

What is brought to mind for Jessica is Amazon’s Alexa. There was also a story recently about installing Amazon tabs around your home to refill necessary items like detergent or food.

There is also a robot that exists that can feed your dog automatically. Perhaps not the best idea!

When asked about future technology, do not start talking about items you already have. Focus on the future, as the question asks, not products that are ubiquitous in the present.

Technology that is being developed but not common is excellent to bring up as well. This you should call emerging technology.

Plus, if you live in an urban area with a lot of modern, new apartments being built, then this technology will exist in more homes.

The toilets in Japan are a case in point. Lindsay recalls loving the feature of the warming seat which she wished existed everywhere.

Jessica would like to see a flat screen in every wall, that shows a fireplace in the winter to add warmth and coziness.
