We got an email from a student about disappointing results.

Recently, she took IELTS and got Listening 6.5, Reading 7, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 6.5.

She wants to work in the UK, and was wondering if she could increase these scores to a 7 in one month.

We can tell from her Speaking score that she already has a high-level of English, so raising her scores is just a matter of learning and practicing the test strategies.

The Listening strategies are simple and straight-forward, and it would be easy to raise that score by half a band.

Regarding her Reading score, as she already has a 7, with our Reading strategies she could go up to a 9 in this section!

If you’re coming into our course at already a high level, you can definitely increase in 30 days. However, if you’re at an intermediate level, you should choose at least a 60-day plan. You still need time to improve your overall level of English.

Turning to the 5.5 in Writing, it is most likely that this student simply didn’t know the test requirements and missed some vital features of the essays that are needed for high scores.

However, it is also possible that she misunderstood the question. This is another advantage of a study plan like ours, which encourages you to seek out a wide variety of resources.

More specifically, in Writing Task 2, perhaps the part of the question which asks you to use personal experience was overly focused on. That may lead to an informal style of writing.

In addition, she may have missed using the appropriate linking words and paragraph organization.

As to her Speaking, it is hard to evaluate what that half a band increase may mean for her. It could be any feature of the four scoring categories. However, with a one-on-one session with an IELTS professional, that could be determined easily.
