Today you’ll learn how to use new words for improved vocabulary before your next IELTS Exam.

My biggest IELTS fear is in Speaking and, of course, Writing, especially in Lexical Resource… Every time I speak my mouth can’t say something new. I’m always repeating vocabulary even though I know some new words.

Everyone learning a new language experiences this disconnect, between the words you want to learn and the ones you actually use when speaking and writing.

Let’s look at 3 Keys students who have shared their vocabulary systems, such as Vitor and Leticia.

Something they had in common is that they make themselves connect new words to their lives.

For instance, think of a situation in which you’d use the new word.

Then, say this word out loud, in a sentence that you would actually say.

This helps you own the word– just like we’ve talked about owning your Speaking performance, and owning your Reading strategies.

Examples of this vocabulary system:

charismatic

  • Write it down. Say it out loud to make sure you pronounce it correctly.
  • Look it up in the dictionary. Charismatic means that a person is captivating, or having a personality that others are drawn to.
  • Now, think of someone you know who embodies this term.
    • My friend in Boston, for instance. He is extremely charismatic, and makes friends with everyone around him no matter where he is.
  • Then, make yourself use this new word in conversation (even if you’re talking to yourself) at some point in your day.
  • Where will you use this word on IELTS? It’s high-level, so it can be used in Writing, and anywhere on the Speaking Exam when you’re describing people.

Do you have a vocabulary system that helps you remember, and use, new words?
