Today you’ll learn how repetition raises IELTS results, as far as how you are using practice tests in your preparation.

A 3 Keys student in our closed Facebook group recently posted:

Is it better to take one listening test more than two or three times?

There are a couple ways we can interpret this question.

The first is wondering how many practice tests an IELTS candidate should take.

Before answering this, you must realize that the only efficient way to use practice tests is to only do them after you’ve learned the test strategies.

If you take a test before you learn how to do it, you’ll practice wrong, get lower scores, and not only hurt your confidence, but also waste your time.

So, if you’re in our course, or another preparation program, you can start doing test practice immediately after you finish that module.

Now, how many tests should you take a week?

We recommend no more than 2 or 3 IELTS practice tests a week. Use the rest of your time to keep improving.

Tests are only a diagnostic tool, along with using podcasts and newspapers, for instance.

What are student was really asking, however, is whether or not you can use the same test more than once.

If you want to improve your listening comprehension, you can definitely listen to the same test repeatedly.

However, if you want to use it to practice test strategies, you can still use it more than once, but make sure to leave about a week between usages.

This same advice can be used for reading tests.

Repetition is also extremely beneficial for Speaking Part 2. Create positive associations and develop fluency by getting one Part 2 card and practicing it 3 times in a row.
