Today you’ll get useful advice for Writing, learning from Jenny’s inspired Task 2 essay.

jennys inspired task 2 essay

Jenny, a student in our course, won the Writing Wizard contest this month!

She is taking the IELTS Exam to migrate to Canada to continue in the medical profession there.

Before joining the 3 Keys course, she took the exam and didn’t quite reach her target score, but is now feeling much more confident.

Previously, she felt under-prepared, especially in Writing.

3 Keys has helped her organize her ideas in a coherent, high-scoring way.

Students are really worried about using ‘memorized phrases’ on the exam. However, you only get marked down for this if you memorize many sentences in a row, or even a whole paragraph.

Even native speakers, when first learning how to write academically, memorize templates, impressive turns of phrase and transitions.

The test question this month was:

Many are of the opinion that celebrity culture has a significantly negative impact on today’s youth.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

One reason why Jenny’s essay won was because she used real celebrity names. Remember, for higher Task scores, you have be expand on main ideas by being super specific.

For instance, Jenny wrote:

These people have outstanding accomplishments, strong determination, and promote a positive self-image. Take for example Micheal Jordan. He is know for great persistence and hard work in the field of sports. Obstacles do not stop him. He was able to figure out how to climb and work around them.

Another example she used was about Oprah Winfrey.

Although Jenny doesn’t indulge herself in celebrity gossip, she has colleagues that chat about it, and she does have some favorites.

This proves the importance of drawing from your own life experience, and make it more formal for impressive details and examples.

Jenny further notes that her amazing vocabulary comes from reading material that interests her, like opinion articles in The Guardian.

She also has learned many high-level phrases from our podcast, Invisibilia, Stuff you Missed in History Class, and many more podcasts that engage her.

As a side note, I’ve been listening to a super cool new podcast called Disgraceland, about famous musicians who led crazy, sometimes criminal, lives.

What are you reading and listening to that expands your vocabulary and ideas?
