Who is responsible for them?

Another cause could be a history of bullying, leading one to becoming traumatized and a recluse.

Perhaps you could support this with personal memories of someone you know who was bullied.

Lindsay’s first thoughts on anti-social behavior were mass shootings.

The cause would be a lack of treatment for mental health issues.
