Today you’ll get student Igor’s advice on IELTS, and get answers to his strategy questions.

He is taking IELTS to immigrate to Australia, and is aiming for an 8 in every section.

He likes Australians because they are straightforward. A great phrase for that is to say they have “no artifice“.

Igor has taken the exam before, and got a 6, with no preparation. That’s why he chose to learn the 3 Keys system.

He realized he needed to know the structure of the exam more intimately in order to get the scores he needs.

In Listening, focusing on the key words has helped him.

He used to participate in the 3 Keys Facebook group a lot, but, now that he has more work to do, he is limited to reading it often.

Reading questions from other students, and Jessica’s answers, has helped his preparation a great deal.

Igor’s Question 1: Would using old-fashioned words help your IELTS scores?

For instance, should you use bedchamber instead of bedroom?

No. Since no native speakers say that today, it wouldn’t help your score. It’s not appropriate and is outdated.

This is good advice for idioms as well. Make sure we still say them today before using them on the exam.

Igor’s Question 2: What should you do when your mind starts racing on the Speaking Exam, and you don’t know where to start your answer?

First, pay attention to what the examiner is saying .

Don’t think ahead and start planning your answer. Listen and be present for the question.

Still your mind and take a breath.

When they finish the question, use some phrases in your back pocket to buy time to think, like:

Oh, wow, you know what, I’ve honestly never been asked that question before.

You can also simply take a deep breath. Natives do this before answering, so it won’t hurt your fluency.

Igor’s final advice is for you to focus on passing the exam.

Sacrifice some time and study hard, and learn the strategies.

Simply put, make IELTS your job for 30 days or 60 days, follow the 3 Keys study plan, and you’ll get the scores you need.
