In this article, you’ll learn why an IELTS Part 3 answer scores an 8+, about children and truth.

An excellent way to set yourself up for success on test day is, simply, to know the test.

It’s not always enough to have a high level of English. You must also know what exactly the examiner is listening for in order to award you band 7, 8 or 9 for your Speaking.

Planning strategically like this is necessary for engineering the highest score possible.

So, let’s look at an example Part 3 answer about children and honesty:

IELTS Question: What kinds of things do children often lie about?

Oh, gosh, well, it’s been ages since I was a child, but let’s see if I can remember. I seem to recall the crux of most lies having the purpose of simply avoiding punishment. You know, I don’t really know if children have much of a conscience, to be honest. That’s not to say that they’re little psychos running around with evil intents; rather, their egos are just consuming them at the early stages, and life is more black and white. So, for instance, if I am 6 years old and I accidentally break a window, and my mom asks me if I did it, I’ll lie through my teeth! Anything to avoid a lack of dessert and cartoons.

How does this score 8+?

Fluency and Coherence:

  • It’s organized. First I introduce it logically. Then, my ideas flow from general to very specific, with a very clear example.
  • Transition phrases: Oh, gosh, well… / I seem to recall… / You know,… / … to be honest / That’s not to say… rather… / So, for instance…
  • It’s not too short, giving little information, and not too long, wandering off topic and repeating ideas.
