IELTS Energy 502: How, When and Why you Repeat the Task 2 Topic

Today you’ll learn the facts about when to repeat the Task 2 topic in your IELTS essay.

repeat task 2 topic

A student in our closed Facebook group asked an interesting question:

I would like to ask about Writing Task 2, the Argument essay, when I describe both views. In the introduction statement should I paraphrase the statement twice, and in the following paragraphs should I also paraphrase the statement another time?

A couple weeks ago, we did an episode about how to paraphrase the Writing Task 1 question in the first sentence of your essay.

This rule is not as straightforward in Task 2, however. We don’t begin our essay that way.

In the first sentence you must introduce the topic, but you’re not paraphrasing the entire question.

For instance, if the question is, “Many people today feel that all subjects in universities should have equal numbers of males and females in every subject. Do you agree or disagree?”

The key words from the question, or the topic, is equal numbers, males and females, all university subjects.

You could paraphrase this in a number of ways: equal representation in classes of women and men; gender representation in colleges; education for both genders; schooling for males and females; academic options; enrollment numbers.

You must include the topic often in your essay, so you need paraphrases for it.

After introducing it in the first sentence, you could use pronoun reference in the second sentence by saying, “Some believe that this issue has a number of benefits.”

Pronouns are something the examiner must see in order to award high scores for Cohesion Coherence, like the formal pronoun one.

You must also include the essay topic in the first sentence of each body paragraph. Here, you should use paraphrases.
