IELTS Energy 773: Native Morne Says IELTS is Not ‘Just an English Test’

Today you’ll hear Morne tell you why IELTS is not just an English test.

Morne is from South Africa, just like Andrea, another successful 3 Keys student.

He took the exam for the first time, got 9 for Listening and Reading, 8.5 for Speaking, and 6 for Writing.

How is this possible that a near-native English speaker gets a 6 on Writing?

Well, the first time, he underestimated the exam, only studying for 2 weeks.

IELTS is not just an English test!

Being a native speaker does not guarantee 9’s.

Also, he had the wrong information about the exam going in. He saw a YouTube video that told him he only needed one paragraph in Task 1.

Wrong!

You need one sentence opening and one sentence closing, and a paragraph for each bullet point.

Morne has also learned, in 3 Keys IELTS, to get very specific in his letter, adding loads of details.

This was also his issue in Task 2, not getting detailed enough.

Here’s a tip: try to take out the word ‘people’ from your writing. Don’t just use that general word. Get specific, like ‘third graders‘ or ‘urban dwellers‘.

In 3 Keys IELTS, Morne has also learned to put his personal opinion throughout his essay, stating it directly and clearly.

Finally, Morne shared a link that you can use to practice for the computer-based IELTS exam.
