Today you’ll find out what you can learn, and not learn, when reading model IELTS essays.
There are a great many IELTS sites out there, and textbooks, and many of them include model essays.
Surely, you’ve found this, just by searching ‘model IELTS essays‘ on the web.
However, with all these different sources, are you learning how to craft your own essay?
It’s confusing, and searching and reading all of this can end up wasting a lot of your precious time.
You need to know who wrote them, under what conditions, and if these models would actually score highly according to IELTS scoring requirements.
Why some ‘high-level’ essays are demotivating
Often times, the models you seek as IELTS candidates are those said to score a band 9.
However, these are most likely written by native speakers, usually teachers.
There are two warnings here:
- The writer took their time to write it. They might have used a thesaurus. At the very least, it was not written under exam conditions, and, thus, is not a valid model essay for you, as a student.
- The writer may an IELTS instructor, but not an examiner. Thus, they will not know the unique requirements of the IELTS Exam, and, therefore, not score a 9 anyway.
So, make sure that the high-scoring essay you’re reading is actually possible under exam conditions, giving you a real idea of what you should be aiming for.
