Today you’ll see a simple study plan for 1 week before the IELTS Exam, to manage your time and prepare for success.
In the week leading up to your exam, you have to be realistic.
By that, I mean you’re probably not going to really learn any new skills or strategies that will change your score on exam day.
Hopefully, by this stage, you’ve been preparing for a month or more, and you’ve learned all the strategies you need, and applied them to test practice.
You should feel, at this stage, that you’ve prepared as fully as you can, given 100% to knowing the exam and improving your English.
In the week before the test, then, it’s as much about mental preparation as it is about practice.
I’ve seen students ruin themselves right before their test, by overloading themselves with mock exams. This creates negative pressure surrounding IELTS, and it also is mentally draining.
So, this is my recommendation for the week leading up to your exam:
Monday
- Do a full Listening Exam
- Read a newspaper in English
- Write about one of the articles you read, summarizing the information and your opinions on it

- Watch a movie in English
- Talk out loud to yourself or a friend about the movie, explaining the plot and your opinions about it
Wednesday
- Do a full Writing Exam. Don’t do it at home, though. Use IELTS Answer Sheets and sit in a cafe or library.
- Do a full Speaking Exam. Ask a friend to be the examiner.
- Listen to a podcast in English
Thursday
- Practice whichever part of the exam you are most worried about
- Go to an event or activity in your city, and then speak out loud or write about it afterward
Friday
- Exercise while listening to podcasts in English
- Review test strategies for all four sections
- Remind yourself how hard you’ve worked, and that you’ve done your best, so your performance tomorrow will be rocking!
- Eat a healthy dinner and get some rest!
