Pronouns are important for your Cohesion Coherence score, in Speaking and Writing.
High scores in Cohesion Coherence depend on the logic of your ideas, and also how these ideas flow from one to another.
This means that you must use a wide array of linking words and transition phrases.
Connecting your ideas is not only accomplished by using words such as ‘however‘ and ‘in addition‘. Sentences are bound together by pronouns as well!
Pronouns are small but mighty words. They can help your score in a few ways:
- They help you to not repeat vocabulary.
- They help connect one sentence to another.
In order to not repeat a word or phrase, pronoun reference is extremely useful. We usually accomplish this by using ‘this‘ or ‘that‘ to refer to whole ideas that were just stated, or using ‘pronoun + synonym‘.

Contemporary adolescents spend more time on social media than any other generation. This leads to a decrease in social skills, and an inability to function in the real world.
In Writing, using the formal pronoun ‘one’ is a high-level way to express yourself. In academic writing, it is inappropriate to use ‘you‘, and this is true in IELTS as well.
Thus, use the formal pronoun ‘one’ to impress the examiner in Writing Task 2.
