Getting The Deals

Who doesn’t love to save money on things you buy?

How do you describe it when something you bought was a good price?

We often say “on sale.” You might say, “I got it on sale.”

However, this is a very basic way to say this, and sometimes you want to take it a step further.

At this point in your language it is important to learn many new ways of saying something like this.

Talking about a good deal is actually quite common when it comes to everyday conversations, so knowing how to approach this matters greatly.

Sharing The Details The Right Way

It is great to connect with people in these situations because people generally love talking about their purchases.

People really want to talk about their purchase if they got a good deal on it.

The only thing is you don’t want to sound like you are bragging or come off as really cheap.

So be sure that you take the time to read the situation and the person you are talking to.

If a person recently bought the same thing and you got a better price, don’t brag!

Also, maybe it is cultural as to whether or not people discuss the pricing.

It’s fine to talk about getting a good deal, just be sure that you keep it light and are talking to somebody who will actually appreciate it.

Great Phrases To Use

If you want to talk about getting a good deal, there are many ways to do this.

Sure, you can say that you got something on sale but that’s a basic term for it.

Try to challenge yourself and use some more complex phrases to get your point across.

So what can you say?

I got a great deal: It still says that you got your purchase on sale, but it’s a lighter approach in general.

L: Nice pants Michelle! How cute!

M: Thanks Lindsay. I got a great deal on them, too. They were 15 bucks!

L: Wow!

It was a steal: This is definitely a looser term but it gets the point across. It’s a fun way of saying that you got it for practically nothing.

M: I can’t believe you got a new car, Lindsay! It’s so nice!

L: Thanks! You’ll never believe it-it was a steal. It was only 5,000 dollars!

M: Wow! You’re so lucky!

It cost next to nothing: This is straight and to the point and tells people that you paid very little for something that you wanted.

L: Parking in the city is so expensive.

M: I know, but I got this app that helps you find cheap parking. The last time I parked in the city, it cost next to nothing.

I got a bargain: You’re not necessarily releasing any details but you’re saying that you got something at a discount.

M: I got a subscription to People Magazine for one buck a month!

L: What a bargain! (a different way to use it)

Dirt Cheap: This is another slang term that says that you paid very little for an item at the store.

L: Can you believe these earrings were only 12.50?

M: Wow!

L: I know–dirt cheap right?

All of these phrases work quite well to say that you got something at a discount.

Try using them in conversation as they all work much in the same way.

Takeaway

It’s fun to talk about purchases and prices.

You have to read the situation and think through if it is appropriate to talk about how much something cost- this could be cultural!

Try these phrases today instead of “It was on sale”- they are fun and unique.

They can be a great thing to talk about, but just be aware of the scenario and the tone of voice to deliver it.

Try them when you feel comfortable and see how well they can work.
