How often do you discuss societal issues with friends?
Many IELTS Part 3 questions are about society as a whole.
These topics are very similar to those in IELTS Writing Task 2.
Today you’ll learn our step-by-step strategy for practicing IELTS Speaking Part 3 questions.
How is Speaking Part 3 different?
Speaking Parts 1 and 2 are about your personal life and experience.
The questions in Part 3 are about the world around you.
You need to be ready to discuss social, environmental and educational issues.
Step 1: Follow a structure
Structure for Speaking Part 3:
- Give your opinion
- Support your opinion with specific reasons, details and examples
- Give a short, one-sentence summary if there is time
Remember that the Examiner may interrupt you if they need to ask questions.
Don’t worry about it if you haven’t yet summarized.
Step 2: Write Out Your Answers
Before trying to answer out loud spontaneously, it is very helpful to practice writing out responses.
Use impressive vocabulary and high-level linking words.
Strong, specific support is crucial, so provide very specific examples and details.
This support can come from your personal experience.
It is not too informal to use examples from your life or the lives of people you know.
What is key is that the language you use is high-level, both vocabulary and transition phrases.
After you write out your answers, read them out loud.
Try to limit yourself to one minute.

Practice in front of a mirror.
This helps minimize anxiety and build confidence.
Record your answers and take notes about linking words and specific examples you give.
Write down any vocabulary that you repeat and words that you think are too easy or informal.
Then, practice the same answer again.
