Many IELTS students lose points because they repeat the same words again and again.
Today we’ll show you how to vary your vocabulary and ideas naturally to boost your scores.
How does repetition affect your score?
If you keep saying the same words, like “very important” or “very good,” your score will stay stuck around band 6.
For example, notice the repetition in this answer:
“I think exercise is very important because it’s very good for your health and very helpful for reducing stress.”
The examiner is listening for range and an ability to paraphrase and use synonyms.
Higher-scoring synonyms
- very important → essential / crucial
- very good → beneficial / effective
- very big → massive / enormous
A higher-scoring version of this example is: “Exercise is essential because it’s beneficial for your health.”
Weak answer: “Technology is very important nowadays.”
Better answer: “Technology plays a crucial role in modern life.”
Weak answer: “It’s very interesting because it’s always been interesting.”
Better answer: “It’s fascinating because it allows people to explore new cultures and perspectives.
