We have a question from a listener who is wondering about the best way to stay motivated and learn English.

Hi ladies,

So I want to spend one hour of English a day. Would it be better to focus on just one episode or listen to four episodes a day? If I listen to one episode I could go deeper into vocabulary and things like that. But if I listen to multiple episodes I could cover more. I’m just not sure which way is better.

Any help you could provide would be much appreciated.

Thank you for your help,

Reza

Consider What You Are Trying To Accomplish

What do you want to achieve with your English?

How can you achieve your English speaking goals?

Goals are such an important part of life, and you probably have them in multiple areas of your life.

There comes a time when you need some help reaching your goals, and that’s part of life.

It can be hard to teach yourself something you don’t know, and it’s also hard to always motivate yourself.

You need a community to help you to reach your goals and stay motivated along the way.

When we look at the question from the listener, it’s about going deeper or covering more–and this comes down to what your goals are.

You don’t want to just memorize things, but rather actually really learn English.

You want to live it and learn it so that you will retain it.

You need a learning objective to help you to reach that goal or that target effectively.

Both approaches or targets are great, but you have to know and focus on your goal.

It can be refreshing to put everything else aside and say that this is the only thing that matters to you, or that you are focusing on.

Breaking It Down Into Smaller Pieces

You have to consider what your own individual goals are, because this is what will help you to focus and what will ensure that you get what you want.

If you take the example from the listener, then it may be better to listen to multiple episodes depending on the goal.

It may be an event that you are working towards, and that ties into your overall goal.

It may be an exam or some event where you are going to attend where you want to speak the language.

It may be that you want to work at vocabulary, and that comes in the way of having specific targets to help you to get there.

Listen to the podcasts, choose the words that you want to add to your vocabulary list, and then use the app to help you to reach your overall goal.

This is a structure that will help you to reach your goals successfully, and ultimately make it a positive thing.

You want to be careful not to take on too much at once, or else you are setting yourself up for failure.

You have to be realistic in what your goals are, and then work towards them at a doable pace.

If your goal is something like pronunciation, then you want to focus on one episode and listen to it over and over.

This helps you to shadow, take your time and listen, and then really absorb what you are trying to say.

This is where the goal helps you to determine which strategy and which targets will help you to get to where you want to be.

You need specifics to help you otherwise it all becomes too overwhelming, and you won’t be likely to stick to it.

Different Goals Require Different Tactics

If you were to cover multiple episodes in a day, then you may have a goal of listening comprehension.

You are trying to really understand the language, and this comes by immersing yourself into English.

You wouldn’t listen to the same episode over and over, but rather listen to different episodes and even different podcasts too.

You have active learning and passive learning–there’s a big difference here and this helps to determine your goals too.

Decide what your goal is for the day, but also what your overall goal is.

You can’t accomplish everything all at once, and this is why you have to revisit things often.

Try to re-evaluate things every week, and this will help you to see what’s working and what’s not.

Be explicit in your goals and take the time to write things down so that you are accountable and you have it all written down in front of you.

If you have just one goal and you write it down and revisit it, then you can achieve it.

You don’t want to be too vague, and that’s why having specific goals with detail can be really important.

Takeaway

Having goals is such an important part of life.

If you want to achieve something, such as learning to speak English better, than goals will help you to get to where you want to be.

You want to be sure that you put thought and details into your goals so that they are defined.

Be clear with yourself on what your goals are, and then you can determine the targets to help you to get there.

This is a great approach to learning and speaking English more effectively, and to so many other things in life too.
