Today we will meet Martin Stoner who is a native English teacher but has worked in the business world in Germany.
While he was working in Germany he noticed how much the cultural differences affected the way that people conducted business.
Martin is here today to show us how to succeed in the business world in English.
Martin’s tips:
- Relax first
- Improve your understanding of the business world in your target country. Read articles about what’s going on in the business world where you are going. Try to relate to everything and personalize things. Think about how things apply to your own life.
- Learn as many expressions as possible and practice using them. It’s best to listen to a lot of content from different sources but only try to learn 5 new expressions at one time.
- Speak with your colleagues regularly or hire a business English tutor. It’s great if you can practice with the people around you at work but if you have specific learning goals or you need specific help then it’s best to hire a private business English tutor.
Martin’s Bio:
Martin’s career in the business world started early. Whilst still at school, he founded a market stall selling discount books, a community cinema (there wasn’t even a cinema in his hometown) and a snack delivery service catering to local office workers. Speaking fluent-ish German and his native English, he was quickly snapped up by an Anglo-German property company after leaving school and was relocated to Germany to begin his work assisting with the selling of German investment property to international clients. It was there that he reaffirmed his interest in doing business and working with different people from around the world. He decided to leave Germany to return to the UK to pursue his degree in Business Management and German at the University of Manchester. He has also since qualified as a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), taught English at a high school in Austria for a year and is currently dedicating most of his professional life to tutoring English to Business people and other professionals online. Martin’s next project is to master Japanese – at the moment he is pretty rubbish, in his own words.
