English how to ask if you can borrow something

How do you ask a friend if you can borrow something that belongs to them?

In Episode 193 we talked about how to borrow money in English but today we’re talking about borrowing an item from someone.

Find out how to do it today.

How to ask to borrow something:

  • “Hey can I borrow your tent for the summer?” or “Hey can I borrow your pencil for a sec? (just a second)”
  • “I’ll give it back next week” or “I’ll get it back to you by September”
  • “Can I bum a cigarette?” (this is only used by smokers)
  • “Can you lend me a sweater?” (Be careful with the differences between “borrow” and “lend”)
  • “Could I borrow ___ from you?”
