The Tie To The National Anthem
Pretty much every American sport played within this country has the same ritual–the National Anthem is played at the beginning.
This patriotic song is played at every game, even down to the high school level.
This ritual is a part of all sports within the US, and people are supposed to stop what they’re doing and pay attention to sing along.
It was never questioned, because this was always a tradition within this country.
This One Boycott Changed Everything
It wasn’t until Colin Kaepernick questioned this that it drew attention.
He was a player within the NFL and he decided to take a knee during the National Anthem.
He did this to take a stand against police brutality happening to African Americans, particularly men, within the country.
He wanted to use his position to draw attention to something that he saw as wrong within our country.
A Political Debate Has Come About
Some people saw this as an attack against our country and as him acting as if he is not patriotic.
Some people respected this and understood why he used this as a platform to draw attention to a growing problem within our country.

This Has Become A Boycott and Fueled An Entire Movement
Many of the cases of police brutality are on video and so people can live this experience by watching this footage.
This brings about a lot of emotion as a result of what is shown happening in real life on these videos.
There are measures being put in place to try to stop this police brutality, including putting cameras on police officers when they are on duty.
These videos show innocent African Americans suffering or dying as a result of police brutality that is racially charged.
By Kaepernick taking a knee during the National Anthem, he is protesting this brutality and this is his stand.
Some would argue that him taking a knee during a very visible and patriotic time is him being unpatriotic or attacking our country.
