Recently, a student who attended our Facebook Live class posted this Speaking Part 1 question she faced on her IELTS Exam:
What kind of potato chips do you like?
Lindsay said:
Well, there are so many options when it comes to potato chips. I could go with Cheetos, where I get that orange on my hands, or I could go with Fritos or Doritos from my childhood, but the one that I really come back to, which I love, is good old fashioned Cape Cod potato chips because it brings back memories from my childhood and I have that sense of nostalgia from backyard barbecues from when I was a kid, so, definitely Cape Cod potato chips.

What is a traditional dish from your culture that you enjoy?
Jessica said:
Well, that’s a funny question for an American because people don’t think of us as, like… the traditional dishes are often perceived as really unhealthy, like hamburgers, and stuff like that. But, honestly, I do love a good hamburger. I don’t care how stereotypical that sounds. I could eat a hamburger at least once a day every day. I seriously could.

What is a meal that you enjoy having out with friends?
Lindsay said:
I particularly love getting tapas when I go out with friends. I just went out on Sunday to a place called Barcelona, and we got some great stuff- tortilla patatas, really a variety of cheeses. It’s a nice way to share with your friends and build a relationship with them, because you’re not just hording your own food.
Jessica said:
Well, actually, the favorite group of people I like to go out with is other mom friends and their kids. I absolutely love going out with kids and families and sharing big meals together, and trying something new like sushi. I’m so proud that my 6 year old loves going to Japanese restaurants now. This is super awesome to not only talk about the the food and explore different ideas and flavors, but culture as well, because the food that we have with friends, this is connection to culture and this creates awesome conversation at the dinner table. And, so, what you talk about with your friends around the food, this is part of the memory, this is part of the enjoyment is the conversation you have while you’re eating. So, I would totally say sushi restaurants with 6 year olds.
When in doubt about what to say, go personal!
