Today we’ll discuss the differences between a 6.5 and a 7 for IELTS Task 1, so you can improve your Writing score on your next exam!
Recently, a high-level student in our course posted in our closed Facebook group:
I’d like to know the difference between a 6.5 and a 7 on Writing General Training. Thanks.
If you’re an Academic student, this advice is also for you! The only difference in the scores between General and Academic is in Task Achievement.
A General Task 1 asks you to write a letter, while an Academic question usually presents a graph with numbers that you must write an essay about.
Task Achievement
- A 6 student will mention all the bullet points in the letter, but will not cover all of them in detail.
- A 7 student, in contrast, will mention strong, specific details about each bullet point in the question.
- A 6 student will have some inconsistencies in tone, but a 7 student will feature consistent tone throughout the letter.
Cohesion / Coherence
- A 7 essay features a variety of linking words, including some more interesting phrases, such as Regarding the… (at the beginning of paragraph 2) and Turning to the… (at the beginning of paragraph 3).
- A 6 essay utilizes linking words and phrases, but not as many high-level ones.

Grammar
- A 6 essay/letter has a variety of sentence structures with quite a few mistakes, but none that prevent the examiner from understanding what you mean.
- A 7 essay/letter has a lot of perfect sentences, and a range of sentence structures.
