Today we present one inspiriting brainstorm for impossible task 2 questions.

A student of ours recently posted about her IELTS Exam experience:

Here was my question from my last exam:

Some advertisements are so harmful for people.

Do you agree or disagree?

What do you think should be done to prevent these advertisements?

I was so confused. Should I write an argument essay or an opinion essay? It asked for both.

This is an example of a mixed question type– the question seems to not adhere to the classic argument/opinion/problem-solution essay question outlines.

These questions are usually a mixture between opinion and a problem/solution.

However, just because this is a bit unfamiliar, you still stick to the same strategies.

In fact, these, I feel, are easier. When there are two questions in the writing prompt, just write one body paragraph about each of them.

So, here, you’d write about your opinion in paragraph 2 and solutions in paragraph 3. Just remember what the examiner is looking for to award a 7+. She/he must see a balanced approach to the Writing Task 2 question.

Brainstorm: harmful advertisements

  • Body image: adverts leave unattainable images of what women should look like, leading to eating disorders and psychiatric problems
  • Unhealthy products: fast food like Carl’s Jr. (this is a topic sometimes in Speaking Part 3 as well)

Brainstorm: solutions for harmful ads

  • Labels on fast food ads: Studies are conclusive that these ingredients cause coronary disease
  • Laws about presenting people in ads: The people must be real!
  • Education: Teach kids to be strong, smart and confident

Remember to only write the information you need in your brainstorm, including specific examples and details.

Read and listen widely to prepare yourself with impressive ideas!
