Today we’ll share titles of our favorite books and movies for IELTS preparation.
There are numerous benefits to reading, in addition to raising your IELTS scores!
Reading and watching for pleasure allows you to absorb English in a relaxed state, and you’ll be surprised at the vocabulary and ideas that you retain from these forms of entertainment.
In a recent post, I recommended some novels that you could get into, separated by genre.
Today, however, we’ll focus on books which have also been turned into movies. This way, you can read the book first and then watch the movie, increasing your comprehension.
Then, on the Speaking test, you could describe the story and characters in detail in Speaking Part 1 and 2. Plus, various questions related to entertainment and creativity come up in Part 3, so you could also use your experience to answer those questions.
Jessica’s recommendations:
The Stand– A post-apocalyptic novel about the few good people left on Earth who band together to fight an evil bad guy. This was written by Stephen King, and made into a mini-series in the 1980’s. It may be old, but it holds up!
The Shining– Another Stephen King novel, this is one of his classic tales of horror. The movie based on the book, by Stanley Kubrick, is another horror classic. Interestingly, the outside of the Overlook Hotel in the movie is the Timberline Lodge, just outside Portland, OR.

To take this story further, there was a documentary about the making of The Shining, called Room 237. (I say the wrong room number in the episode!)
There are so many pop culture references to this story, that if you watch this movie you’ll understand more of what native speakers are talking about!
And, of course, referencing quotes from movies like this on your Speaking Exam would make you sound more native and natural!
Wild– This is a book based on the real life of a woman who hikes the Pacific Crest Trail by herself on a journey of healing and self-discovery.
Lindsay’s recommendations:
Into the Wild– This is based on a true story about a young man who goes on a solo trip to Alaska. It’s a dramatic movie, in which both Lindsay and Jessica cried!
Choose at least one of these recommendations today, read the book, and then watch the movie!
