Today you’ll learn why in order to get a band 9, you need today’s phrases!

We’ve done some episodes on linking words in the past, and today we’re focusing on specific parallel phrases for ‘in order to‘.

In a recent Facebook Live session, a student asked:

Could you please tell me 2 or 3 synonyms for ‘in order to’?

This is a transition you use all over Speaking and Writing. Even in Speaking Part 1, you could say, “In order to get a good job, I need to pass IELTS.

A nice way to rephrase would be to use the conditional, like, “If I want to obtain a better position in the future, I need to pass IELTS.”

Using conditionals and relative clauses is the easiest way to include a variety of complex sentences structures for better Grammar scores.

Another expression you could use is ‘to be able to‘, such as, “To be able to secure better employment, I need to pass IELTS.”

Although this phrase looks simple, it is interesting because not many students use it.

Your Vocabulary score in Speaking depends on the range you use, from informal to formal.

For Writing, however, you must use academic, advanced vocab.

The third way you could paraphrase this transition phrase is ‘in an effort to‘.

This is a very formal phrase, so it’s excellent for Speaking Part 3 and Writing Task 2. For instance, “In an effort to clean up the city, we have passed a law against littering.”

Write down today’s sentences containing the phrases and practice using them!
