Today you’ll find out how to own your IELTS Speaking Part 3 answers about inventions.

Firstly, remember that there is no wrong answer to Speaking questions. You’re not graded on the complexity of your ideas, especially in Speaking.

So, don’t worry about answering ‘correctly‘, as this can interrupt your fluency. Simply talk about the first thing you think of!

You can be flexible with the topics as well, such as this episode about a Speaking Part 2 history question.

Last week, we did a great episode about brainstorming for future household technology for Speaking Part 2.

So, in this follow-up episode, we expand on this for Part 3. Remember, the topic of the questions in Speaking Part 3 is connected to that of Speaking Part 2.

In Part 3, you should be using higher-level linking words and vocabulary, as is suitable to the formality of the questions.

Part 3 Question: Are there any famous inventors from your country?

Notable features of Lindsay’s answer:

I’d be happy to talk about that.

Modern inventor: Mark Zuckerberg

gigantic contribution to the… global community

Perhaps the first name to come to mind is more famous or historical, like Thomas Edison, but you won’t have as much to say about him!

Part 3 Question: Are there characteristics which make someone a good inventor?

Notable features of Jessica’s answer:

Oh, wow, that’s an awesome question. I guess I’ve never thought about inventors from that perspective.

I would think one of the major ones…

squander a personal fortune

willing to put yourself out there in every respect

Part 3 Question: So, taking risks could be positive. Do you think this is something we could teach children?

what’s not here that we think should exist

this is a risk, financially and academically

willingness to go out and create what’s not there can be taught, absolutely, 100%

You can hear the difference in Lindsay’s intonation between the her first and second answers. The latter combined her two passions– education and entrepreneurial spirit.

If you have the chance to discuss any passions you have, definitely go in that direction. It raises your fluency and pronunciation performance!

And remember that the more off-beat your answer, the more you stand-out as a unique, curious and positive student.

Listen to this episode for another example of how to be flexible about the topic of museums.

Make your answer your own!
