Today you’ll learn to make ‘I don’t know’ not an option your IELTS Speaking Exam.

Check out this video for more information about that!

In this episode, we are specifically talking about questions related to teenagers.

This topic has baffled candidates, as many adults don’t interact with teenagers.

Thus, you must pivot and find something to say.

Lindsay, for instance, doesn’t know any teenagers.

So, she’d have to pivot, and connect this with something else she could talk about.

Lindsay could talk about technology, for instance. The tech that teens have today is in stark contrast to what she had when she was that age.

Even if you don’t personally know any teenagers, you know about the world they have access to and live in.

If you’re asked about a teenager in Part 2, you could do a mind map brainstorm.

Practice note-taking for Part 2– it’s extremely important for your impressive response!

Another interesting pivot might be how much more well-adjusted (or not!) young people are today than in the past.

Jessica has noticed that due to evolving parenting styles, youth today seem more self-confident, as their parents have been more closely involved.

This could be an IELTS Part 2 question:

Describe a teenager that you know.

Notes from Lindsay’s answer:

  • That’s a tricky one right there.
  • … today, versus my life as a teenager in the 90’s
  • one thing that strikes me is…
  • being a little bit less present
  • texting streams
  • adolescence without a smart phone attached to my hip
  • well beyond my high school years
  • a window into people’s lives

Here’s a great resource for age-related vocabulary!
