Jessica Beck
"Director of IELTS Training"

Today you’ll get a band 9 sample Part 2 answer about a comic actor, in case this comes up on your next IELTS Exam!

Watching stand-up comedy is a fantastic way to get into English, improve your vocabulary and fluency, and learn about humor in another culture.

For instance, Jessica recently watched the newest Netflix special by John Mulaney, and highly recommends it.

On a recent IELTS Exam, the Speaking Part 2 topic asked candidates to describe their favorite comic actor, and stand-ups still connect to this, even if they’re not exactly actors.

Lindsay also just attended a Boston comedy festival, and could describe how she ended up at the festival, the festival itself, and her favorite performer.

What if your stuck hanging, and don’t really know about an actor from your country?

You could pivot:

Honestly, I don’t know a lot about comedians from my country, per se, but I am a big fan of American/British comedies. One of my favorite funny movies/TV programs is…. It makes me laugh because… My favorite episode is…

Interestingly, even though Jessica is into comedy, she had a tough time coming up with her answer for this.

She doesn’t know enough about the stand-up’s life, or couldn’t think of appropriate jokes, to fill 2 minutes.

So, the best person she could come up with was Marc Maron, the host of the podcast WTF.

He interviews comedians and a wide variety of celebrities and notables, such as President Barack Obama!

Notable phrases from Jessica’s sample answer:

  • super dorky fan of comedy
  • an immediate love of sketch comedy
  • huge fan of Comedy Central
  • started out as a stand-up comic in Boston
  • literally in his garage
  • it’s his thing
  • his interviewing style is completely unique
  • it speaks directly to his audience, their insecurities, vulnerabilities
  • tend to be quite depressed

Lindsay would have talked more about his brand and his podcast infamy, because that’s what interests her.

Remember, don’t answer in a way you think the examiner wants- put yourself, your own personality and your interests into every one of your answers on the IELTS Speaking Exam.
