Today you’ll hear student Abner ask amazing IELTS questions.abner amazing ielts questions

Recently, we had a review contest, and Abner was chosen to come on the show.

He’s never taken the test before, and is preparing for his first exam.

He listens to our podcast, studies English with a Brazilian teacher, and reads news on Twitter from various resources.

He also listens to a Canadian classic rock station while he’s at work.

Abner and his wife have 1 year before they want to take the exam and subsequently move to Canada.

If you have a year like Abner, you can mimic his preparation. Then, 6 months before your test, you should get more focused on learning the strategies.

Abner has four questions:

#1 Should we use contractions (i.e. can’t, won’t) in Speaking?

Yes, you should use contractions. It would sound very awkward and unnatural if you did not use contractions.

In formal writing, though, do not use contractions.

#2 Can I use ‘I don’t have a clue‘ in Writing?

You can use this in informal letters for General Training Task 1, but it is too informal for Task 2 or formal letters.

The examiner still looks for your ability to use idiomatic language in writing, though, but these must be formal idioms.

#3 What are some resources for the various accents on the IELTS Listening test?

Another suggestion is to choose an actor you like, such as Australian actors Naomi Watts or Toni Colette, and find their earlier work in which they used their native accents.

For New Zealand accents, try the comedies Flight of the Concords and What We Do in the Shadows.

As to British English, Black Mirror, Wallander and Wanderlust are amazing.

#4 Does the Speaking examiner care about our accent?

For a 7 in Pronunciation, you can still have some first language accent, but still say all the sounds clearly and use expressive intonation and stress.
