Today you’ll learn the difference between matching headings and finding information in IELTS Reading.
We had this question from a 3 Keys student in our closed Facebook group:
I am studying matching information in paragraphs; however, I’m not sure how to eliminate the irrelevant paragraph at the beginning. There are always more paragraphs than question statements.
Difference #1: When to do the questions
For matching headings to paragraphs, we recommend trying to eliminate a heading if it seems like a detail, or it is simply not in the passage.
That does not work for finding information in paragraphs.
Matching questions come before the passage; however, still, you need to skim the passage before you look at these questions.
For finding information questions, you must always save this group of questions to do last.
Difference #2: Where the answers are
The headings are always main ideas. Thus, they are usually in the beginning and/or end of the paragraphs.

Difference #3: How difficult the questions are

In contrast, finding information questions are really hard.
That’s why you save it for last, because you’ll have to guess in which paragraph the answers are.
You need extra time for these questions, because you have to scan more.
