These idioms are great, because they’re flexible. This means you can apply them to many different topics in Speaking or Writing.

Remember, you must use some idioms for a 7 or higher for Vocabulary, in both Writing and Speaking.

Time Idioms

it’s high time– something should have happened already

This is great for Writing and Speaking for solutions or taking action.

For example, you could say, “Well, I believe it’s high time that electric cars were made more affordable.”

better late than never– it’s better than it happened now, instead of never

For instance, if you are describing a problem while travelling, you could say, “Finally, we arrived at the hotel. I mean, better late than never.”

in the nick of time– at the last possible moment

You can use this in both Writing and Speaking.

For example, in describing a concert you went to and thought you were going to be late, you could say, “We got there just in the nick of time. Literally, the band starting playing the second we got in there.”

that ship has sailed- this opportunity is gone

You could use this in Speaking or Writing.

Say, for instance, that you wanted to be an astronaut when you were younger, and now you’re in your 30’s or 40’s. You could say, “That ship has sailed. There’s no way I could become an astronaut right now.”
