In all honesty, the General Training Task 1 is more difficult than the Academic Task 1.

This is because of two reasons.

Reason #1: Topics

The Academic Task 1 is very predictable.

You know you will get one of 5 question types.

Click here to read the article: ”What are the Different Types of IELTS Writing Task 1 Questions?”

Thus, you can memorize the exact vocabulary, sentence structures and linking words that you will need. (3 Keys IELTS has all of that!)

For the General Training letter, however, you have no idea what topic you will get.

You may have to describe a neighborhood party, a car accident, or a bad experience at a hotel. Who knows!

Plus, you may have to write a formal, informal, or semi-formal letter.

Therefore, you can’t just memorize the vocabulary and linking words you need, because you don’t know what you’ll have to write about.

Reason #2: Creativity

On the Academic Task 1, you cannot use your imagination. You can’t even put in your opinion.

You must only describe what you see.

Once you know the Task 1 strategies, that’s simple.

For General Task 1, however, you have to be good at brainstorming and using your imagination.

You must include very specific details about each bullet point.

My advice is to put yourself into the situations as much as possible, so you have real memories to describe.

Think of a party you’ve been to, or a hotel you’ve stayed at, for instance.

Having said that, the Reading test for General is easier!

The Task 2 question is also slightly easier.
