She watched another video on our YouTube channel called ‘Finally, Punctuation Rules for IELTS Writing’.

In that video, I note how higher level linking words like ‘however’ and ‘nevertheless’ can only be used after a semicolon or a period.

Then, she saw an example sentence of mine using ‘…but, nevertheless, …’, and was confused.

You can only join 2 sentences with a conjunction, like and, or, but, yet, for, nor and so.

However, you can add emphasis by using an adverb after the conjunction, between 2 commas.

For example: The benefits are numerous, but, nevertheless/nonetheless, I believe there exist a wider variety of drawbacks.

(Nevertheless and nonetheless are conjunctive adverbs.)

You can also say: The U.S. is defined as a first world country, but, shockingly, it does not have the best educational system.
