Do take time to plan

You MUST plan carefully. I recommend taking 3-4 minutes to read the question and study the graph or chart.

You should first group the numbers into two clear categories. You will write about one group in paragraph 2 and the other in paragraph 3.

Also, you have to circle the important numbers to put in your essay.

In our course, I give you the simple 3-step strategy for organizing every Task 1 that IELTS might throw at you.

Do write an overall trend

This is the most important sentence in the whole IELTS Academic Task 1 essay!

Don’t write a conclusion

The fact is that Task 1 is a very short essay. You only have to write 150 words.

You should have a short introduction and two body paragraphs. In the body paragraphs, you have to include all the most important numbers from the graph or graphs. There simply isn’t room for a conclusion.

Don’t just say “increase/decrease”

If you want a high score for vocabulary, and I know you do, you must interesting and varied words and phrases.

In order to impress the examiner, try using vocabulary that native speakers use, not just vocabulary that you learned in an IELTS textbook.

The best way to learn these words is to read the business or finance section of an English-language newspaper, and write down the interesting words and phrases you see that describe numbers and trends.

Do check your essay

Just like with planning, you must leave time to check your essay to increase your chances of scoring highly.

Two important things to proofread your essay for are repeated vocabulary and spelling.

If you repeat the same words too many times, and/or have too many spelling mistakes, you cannot get a high vocabulary score.
