- Choose an newspaper article. We recommend the New York Times.
- Read the the first two lines of every paragraph.
- As soon as you finish, write down everything you remember. Do not look back at the article while you do this.
- Go back to the article and read the whole thing. Check the notes that you wrote, and see if you remembered information correctly.

Activity to Practice Scanning
- Get a newspaper article.
- Scan from right to left, so you don’t read.
- Every time you see a name or a number, circle it, and keep scanning.
- For everything that you circled, read the whole sentence containing that name or number.
- Paraphrase the sentence.
