Today we answer a very important question about being stopped by the examiner on the IELTS Speaking exam.
I just finished my Speaking test yesterday. I had to talk about several topics like where I’m living, flowers, newspapers and the economy. I was stopped both in Part 1 and Part 3, and then the examiner just let me move to the next topic even though I just spoke only 2 or 3 sentences in Part 3. There were only a few questions I completed.
Why does the examiner stop you?
The examiner must complete his/her job, and is required to get through a certain number of questions in the strictly controlled time.
In Part 1, for example, you must answer a specific number of questions about 3 different topics. This is part of showing your vocabulary range- proving that you are able to speak about a variety of topics.
It’s not expressly bad if the examiner stops you. However, it does make the exam a bit awkward, having to be stopped all the time.

So, in Part 1, try to answer in 3-5 sentences. Then, the examiner can move on without having to stop you.
In Part 2, speak for the whole 2 minutes.
In Part 3, your answer should be no more than 1 minute, so that you can answer 3-6 questions.
The fact is, you need to know what exactly should happen on the Speaking exam, and practice this timing a week or two before the exam.
A great preparation plan would be to review all the testing requirements, such as how long to talk for in each part of the Speaking exam.
Then, under test conditions, practice producing the language you need and answering all the questions on the exam.
