Today you’ll meet our 3 Keys student, Dat, who scored 9’s on Speaking and Listening on his most recent IELTS Exam! Not only that, but he got an overall 8.5!

He had taken the test twice previously, 8 years ago and 3 years ago. Before 3 Keys, he got a 7.5 on Listening and an 8 on Speaking, on his second attempt he got a 9 on Listening and an 8 on Speaking.

That’s when he decided to join our course, so he could raise his IELTS Speaking score.

How did he increase his Speaking score by a whole band point?

He learned how to speak naturally, use native fillers, and avoid getting tongue tied.

Dat tried to mimic the way we speak on the show, like using fillers such as I guess, I suppose, and You know, this is tough for me, because this has never been a topic I’m conversant in.

In terms of Listening, he was helped by focusing on parallel expressions and distractors, so he knew what to anticipate on the exam. The same goes for the Reading module.

As far as Writing goes, he found the template very useful, knowing exactly how to organize his ideas.

Tips on how to be yourself, and being a little dramatic in his expression, helped him excel on his Speaking Exam.

Dat also participated in a Speaking and Writing Power Hour, which helped him be aware of certain features in his Writing that he could change for a higher score.

Surprisingly, Dat is going to keep studying to increase his scores even more, and get an overall 9.

He has one last tip for IELTS Speaking Part 2. Dat came up with a general context to apply to many topics- presenting detailed information around the topic, similar to our strategy of telling a story.
