Did you know that there are some abbreviations that sink IELTS Writing scores?

abbreviations sink IELTS writing scores

We had an interesting question in our course’s closed Facebook group:

While I’m practicing my Writing Task 1, a question comes to mind. If the number is 3,000 people, can I just write 3k people? But, would ‘k’ mean kilo in my essay?

The ‘k‘ would mean ‘thousand‘, as ‘kg‘ means ‘kilogram‘.

However, no! Don’t look for short cuts, especially ones like this that wouldn’t save any time.

Also, it would be inappropriate to put ‘k‘ instead of the zero’s in an Academic Essay.

Moreover, in general, we do not want to abbreviate in our formal writing.

When numbers get longer, however, you can use the number word instead of the 0’s, such as saying ‘3 million‘. Still, don’t abbreviate that to ‘M‘!

In Task 1, if there is a distance, or measurement, that is abbreviated in the question, you can abbreviate it in your essay, such as kg, or mi. for ‘miles’.

For everything else, even if it is abbreviated in the Task question, do not abbreviate it in your writing.

For instance, sometimes words are shortened in titles– that is only to fit the title in, do not use that!

Also, titles on charts are often capitalized. Think about this, though, before capitalizing this in your essay. Usually, these words are not proper nouns, and should not be capitalized in your sentences.

If you have too many errors in capitalization, your Grammar Score drops!

In Task 2, it is not appropriate to abbreviate at all. When in doubt, spell it out!
