Today we’ll talk about tech, museums and Writing Task 2.

We had an email from a student who had an odd question recently on her IELTS Exam:

We can view and research history and culture online. Why do we still need museums?

This strikes us as a weird question, as museums are not restricted to just history and culture.

Brainstorm for Tech vs. Museums

When you plan for Writing Task 2, go with the first idea that comes to mind.

Jessica thought of art museums immediately.

Seeing a 2D representation of a painting online cannot compare with the in person.

It’s about the visceral experience, seeing texture from brush strokes and vibrant shades and hues.

To support that, she thought of viewing Picasso’s Guernica in The Reina Sofia museum in Madrid.

It covers an entire, enormous wall. The scale is overwhelming, and could not be represented on a screen.

A visceral reaction is an excellent term to describe something that physically impacts you- an emotion that is so strong, you feel it in your body.

Lindsay recalls her experiences of walking around the Louvre, being surrounded by the paintings and beauty.

Using the idea of the experience itself could always be used as an argument against technology replacing anything, as it doesn’t involve all our senses.

Another direction you could take this in is regarding net neutrality.

Internet service providers now have more power, and thus control the narrative, meaning that they are gatekeepers that can decide what information you can and can’t see.

Thus, there are ideas out there that you may not be able to access online, and can only find out in the world.

Why do you think museums will not be replaced by technology?
