We had an interesting question from a 3 Keys student:

Is it OK to write ‘further in the future’ as a phrase?

Yes, this is a great transition phrase for formal ideas.

For example: Further in the future, I foresee newspapers not being available via hard-copy anymore, but only available on a device.

Another way we could say that is further down the line.

Remember, even in academic writing for Task 2, the examiner still looks for your ability to use idiomatic phrases.

For example, you could say,  “If we continue at this rate, further down the line our oceans will dry up.”

These are prime phrases to use in the conclusion of your essay. In fact, part of our template is to finish your essay with a prediction about the future.

An additional phrase is 20 years from now.

On the face of it, it’s not using impressive vocabulary, but, the collocation with that preposition, is high-scoring and not used well by other students.

An example sentence: If these measures are taken immediately, 20 years from now there will be no war.
