What was the biggest news from the Oscars?

A foreign film, Parasite, won Best Picture for the first time in history.

Some of the conversation about awards shows focuses on the lack of diversity.

The Academy is mostly white men, now with a few women.

This is a big deal for a foreign film to win this award!

Which award winners were noteworthy?

Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for his leading role in The Joker.

  • Lead actor/main actor: the story revolves around them; they are in the main role of the film
  • Supporting actor: actors who have smaller, supporting roles

Phoenix is well-known for his method acting.

  • Method actor: a performer who goes into character and never gets out of character

Changes to the film industry

Many films now are produced by streaming services and are never released to theaters
