Lindsay McMahon
"The English Adventurer"

Recently, we started doing classes on Facebook Live- every Thursday, 12pm PST!

Join the All Ears English Facebook group and you can ask me questions in the session!

The class lasts for 30-45 minutes, so I don’t always have time to get to the amazing questions and comments. Here is one that was posted after the session:

Reading: Sentence ending strategies: Should I start with the incomplete sentences or with the options to match, which one is more feasible?

Good question!

These question types on the IELTS Reading Exam fall into the categories of  Matching Sentence Halves, or sometimes a type of Sentence Completion question.

It looks like this:

  2. 2. The winner was flown to…
  3. 3. Next year, designers will be invited to…

a. meet Neil Degrasse Tyson.

b. an all-inclusive resort in Hawaii.

Top Tips for this question type:

  • There are always more answers than you need.
  • Start by underlining key words in the questions.
  • Then, look at all the possible answers, and underline key words there.
  • Look at the first question, choose the easiest key word to scan for. In this case, 2016.
  • Glance quickly at possible answers and notice which ones are grammatically correct. Put little checks by the possibilities that fit.
  • Scan for that key word, and parallel expressions for the key word.
  • Compare the information you find in the passage with the possible answers.

As with any reading strategy, you need to apply it to test practice, under test conditions, before exam day.

With reading, it’s all about time management!
